New user tutorial

These are the basic requirements to operate on the Telezin network:

  • Supported hardward and software
    • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, or later; or
    • Mac OS X 10.3, or later; or
    • Fedora Core 4, or later.
  • Speaker and Microphone - a headset and microphone is recommended.
  • Internet connection - the softphone supports most routers (some corporate firewalls may block calls).
  • Valid email address - account creation and confirmation is handled using your email address.

To sign-up for a Telezin account:

  • Go to the signup page - Enter the requisite fields. You will receive a confirmation email when your account is created. Confirm your new account by visiting the link in the email.
  • Log in at the login page - Check your personal details. Note your account number (in the top right corner of your web account). You will need your account number to configure your softphone.
  • Download softphone - From the control panel on your web account, select softphone download and install the softphone. Zeroconf installer now available for Microsoft Windows.

Setup instructions

Configuring your softphone:

  • Run the softphone installer - Follow the instructions to install the softphone
  • Launch the softphone - If you downloaded the zeroconf installer, then your softphone will already be configured for your account. Otherwise, when the softphone is launched for the first time, the settings windows is displayed to enter your account information.
  • Enter display name - Your display name is the name that will appear as your caller id.
  • Enter account number - Your account number can be found in the top right corner of your web account. This number is unique to you, and identifies you on the Telezin network.
  • Enter password - You selected a password when creating your web account.
  • Other settings - No other settings are required. However, there may be some other features available on the softphone which may be useful.
  • Commit settings - Accept your settings and the softphone will connect to the Telezin network. An online indicator should appear on the softphone display almost immediately.
  • Make calls - You are now ready to receive and make SIP-to-SIP calls.

Dialing instructions

  • SIP-to-SIP calls:

    Enter peer Telezin account number. The account number is available in the top right corner of your web account.
  • USA/Canada SIP-to-PSTN calls:

    1+(area-code)+(phone-numer) - eg 13602267160
  • International SIP-to-PSTN calls:

    011+(country code)+(area-code)+(phone number) - eg 01161738921111
  • SIP users on other SIP networks:

    sip:username@sipdomain - eg sip:613@fwd.pulver.com

Softphone

The Telezin softphone has been specially developed by Bitlynx Technologies for the Telezin network. The softphone has the following features:

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is SIP?

    The session initiation protocol (SIP) is a voice-over-IP (VoIP) protocol used by the Telezin network to establish telephone calls.

  2. What is a SIP URI?

    A universal resource identifier (URI) is like a webpage universal resource locator (URL) and is used by SIP networks to specify the location of VoIP endpoints on the network. They're very similar to email addresses and work exactly the same way.

    A SIP URi has the form sip:613@telezin.net, where you would replace 613 with the account number or telephone number of the contact.

  3. What is a codec, where are they and how do I select one?

    A codec is a compression algorithm for voice data packets to be sent from your IP Phone to another destination. Both ends must be support the same codecs for the data packets to be transmitted in both directions.

    In the softphone settings, under the Codecs tab, the perference of codecs can be ordered. Codecs listed first will be preferred over the others.

  4. How do I transfer a call?

    With the all being active, simply click the XFER button then dial the Telezin account number or the phone number you want to transfer the call to. Complete the transfer by clicking Talk or presseing the enter key.

  5. Where is the address book?

    The softphone is integrated with Microsoft Windows Address Book. The Address Book is generally found in C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\wab.exe.

    Inside WAB, on the Softphone tab you can enter a SIP URL for each contact.

    You can call the contact by selecting SIP Call... from the action menu off the Action button.

  6. Can I log in from multiple softphones/hardphones?

    You can log in to the Telezin network from multiple softphones or hardphones simultaneously. When an incoming call arrives, all phones will ring, and they will all stop ringing when the first phone is picked up.

  7. What hardware do I need to use the softphone?

    Practically all home computers purchaes within the last 5 years can run the softphone.

  8. Which is the best headset for the softphone?

    A good quality headset is better in the long run. If there is poor isolation between the speakers and the microphone, the remote party will experience and echo during the conversation.

    USB headsets generally more flexible and work equally well on PCs and Macs.

  9. Can I use the built-in microphone and speakers on a notebook computer?

    Yes, the audio systems on most notebook computers works well. You may have to turn your volume and microphone settings to avoid echo for the people you talk with.

  10. What are distinctive ringtones?

    With distinctive ringtones, you can have a different ringtone for incoming calls. Just go to the settings/prefences dialog and specify your favourite ringtone for URI of the incoming calls.
